The New York Jets have added a dynamic new component to their roster by signing running back Tarik Cohen, as confirmed by the team’s recent announcement. Cohen, set to turn 29 in July, is gearing up for a robust return to the NFL following a hiatus since 2020 due to severe injuries.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports Cohen has secured a one-year deal with the Jets. This marks a significant comeback for Cohen, whose career was abruptly disrupted while playing for the Chicago Bears in 2020 due to a devastating combination of a torn ACL, MCL, and a leg fracture during the third week of the season. His recovery process caused him to miss the entire 2021 season.

The challenges continued for Cohen when, after being released by the Bears in March 2022, he suffered a torn Achilles tendon during an offseason workout. Determined to return to the field, Cohen made strides towards recovery and, by September 2023, was signed to the Carolina Panthers’ practice squad. However, his time with the Panthers was short-lived as they released him earlier this month.

The Jets, under the guidance of head coach Robert Saleh, see Cohen’s signing as an opportunity to harness his well-known capabilities, particularly in light of the NFL’s new kickoff rules. Saleh expressed his enthusiasm about Cohen’s potential impact, noting, “Tarik, explosive playmaker, he’s starting to get back healthy. With the new kickoff rules, these kick returners are going to touch the ball over 100 times a year, which is significant. A guy like him, who’s still young, obviously coming off his injuries, we’re excited to have him aboard”, via CBS Sports.

Cohen’s NFL journey has been marked by notable achievements, including being named an All-Pro and Pro Bowl selection in 2018. Over his four seasons with the Bears, he accumulated 1,101 rushing yards on 264 attempts and scored five touchdowns. Additionally, his prowess as a receiver is evidenced by his 209 receptions for 1,575 yards and nine touchdowns. His skill set extends to special teams, where he returned 30 kickoffs for 628 yards and 96 punts for 985 yards, scoring one touchdown.

The Jets’ interest in Cohen particularly centers around his potential contributions to the kickoff and punt return units, aiming to leverage his explosive speed and agility, provided he is fully recovered and ready to perform at his best. This acquisition represents a significant step for Cohen in his professional comeback and a strategic move for the Jets looking to enhance their special teams performance.
