Virginia Tech’s women’s basketball program faces another blow as senior guard Georgia Amoore announces her entry into the transfer portal after a remarkable four-season stint with the Hokies.

Just a week after the departure of head coach Kenny Brooks to Kentucky, the Hokies find themselves bidding farewell to their star point guard. Amoore, who hails from Victoria, Australia, holds one more season of eligibility, courtesy of the NCAA’s COVID-19 extension, but has opted to explore her options elsewhere.

Speculation arose following her initial announcement of leaving Virginia Tech, with rumors swirling about a potential WNBA draft entry. However, Amoore’s decision to stay in college raises questions about her next destination. Could she follow Coach Brooks to Kentucky, or will she forge a new path elsewhere?

In the aftermath of the Hokies’ heartbreaking 75-72 loss to Baylor in the NCAA tournament, Amoore expressed heartfelt sentiments about her bond with Coach Brooks, likening him to a second father.

“This is my second dad, seriously,” Amoore shared via The Roanoke Times. “I am fearful that we are the same person. I’m a 23-year-old woman, and I think I act a little too much like him.”

Reflecting on their journey together, she added, “We’ve been through some tough times. We’ve been through some great times. It’s a relationship that I’ll cherish for the rest of my life. I know that I always have him, and I love him to death.”

Amoore leaves an indelible mark on Virginia Tech’s basketball program, boasting impressive stats throughout her tenure. Averaging 19.2 points and 6.9 assists this season, she leaves a legacy with a career average of 14.7 points and 5.2 assists over 126 games. Her 656 career assists stand as a testament to her impact, making her the program’s all-time leader in assists.

Despite the challenges, Virginia Tech flourished under Amoore’s leadership, securing a first-place finish in the ACC with a stellar 24–7 record (14–4 in ACC) this season. The Hokies’ consistent NCAA tournament appearances, including a memorable Final Four run last year, underscore Amoore’s pivotal role in the team’s success.
